Excited to announce that I’ve accepted a new role at a startup! I recently accepted an offer with a recruitment company, thanks to my connection with the owner who has other business ventures.
I’ll be the first full-cycle recruiter on the team, joining a business-focused partner and a few delivery specialists.
My background is in public sector technology, so transitioning to the private sector is a new challenge for me, but I’m eager to dive in!
If there are any seasoned recruiters or top billers out there, I would greatly appreciate any tips or advice to help me hit the ground running!
Just a note: I’m based in the UK, and they’re offering a 20% commission structure with a £5k threshold.

Understand the Market: Since you’re transitioning from the public sector to private, take time to research the industry you’ll be recruiting for. Understand the key players, current trends, and the skills that are in demand.
Build Relationships: Leverage your existing connections and make new ones. Building strong relationships with both clients and candidates is crucial in recruitment. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your network; they can often refer candidates or give insights on market needs.
Develop Your Pitch: Whether it’s for clients or candidates, having a clear and compelling pitch about your startup and the advantages it offers is essential. Highlight what sets your company apart from others.
Set Up a CRM: If you can, implement a customer relationship management system tailored for recruitment. This will help you track candidates, clients, and communication history effectively.
Stay Organized: With so much on your plate, keep your tasks, candidates, and client interactions organized. A good system will allow you to prioritize and manage your time efficiently.
Learn the Tools: Familiarize yourself with any recruitment tools or software that your company uses. This will streamline your workflow and help you find candidates faster.
Networking: Attend industry events, webinars, and meet-ups in your area. This is a great way to meet potential candidates and clients, and it allows you to establish your presence in the recruitment community.
Seek Feedback: Don’t hesitate to ask for feedback from your teammates and the owner. They can provide valuable insights and help you refine your approach.
Stay Resilient: Startups can be unpredictable, but resilience is key. There may be ups and downs, but staying committed and adaptable will serve you well.
Celebrate Small Wins: In a startup environment, every success matters. Take time to acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small they may seem.
Best of luck in your new role! It’s an exciting time to be in recruitment, and with your proactive approach, you’ll surely make an impact.
