As a recruiter, would you consider hiring a working mom excited to rejoin the workforce? I need to share my thoughts on this.
I’ve applied to over 50 companies and interviewed with more than 30, yet I’m still without a job offer. It’s been three months of searching.
Initially, I tried to brush it off, thinking perhaps my interviews didn’t go well or that other candidates were selected instead. However, I’m starting to suspect that discrimination may be at play. Once they learned my career gap was due to my pregnancy, followed by questions about who would care for my baby, it became clear to me.
In my mind, I would never apply if I didn’t have childcare arranged or wasn’t ready to return to work. Yet, my response is always that we have someone to take care of him.
I’m feeling really discouraged and demotivated after facing repeated rejections.
P.S. I work in a competitive field where there is typically only one open position for hundreds of applicants.

I’m really sorry to hear about what you’re going through. Navigating the job market can be incredibly challenging, especially when dealing with the biases that unfortunately still exist around parenthood and career gaps. It’s disheartening to face repeated rejections, especially when you know you have the skills and determination to succeed.
It’s important to keep reminding yourself of your strengths and what you bring to the table. Many companies value diverse experiences, including those of working moms, who often bring unique perspectives and resilience. It could also be worth considering whether there are companies out there that have family-friendly policies or a culture that embraces working parents.
Networking might also help; reaching out to others in your field can provide support and potentially lead to opportunities where you’ll be valued for your capabilities rather than judged for your circumstances. Keep applying and don’t lose heart. Your perseverance will pay off, and the right opportunity will come along. You’re not alone in this, and there are many who understand and empathize with your journey. Stay strong!
