Concerns for a Job Applicant with Bad Credit
Having worked as a banker for nearly ten years, I’ve been with three different banks—two local and one foreign. I’m excited to share that I’ve reapplied to my former employer, one of the leading banks in the Philippines. I’ve successfully completed the pre-recruitment stages and am now waiting for the final assessment and job offer package.
However, I’m feeling anxious about my credit history. Although I’ve settled most of my debts, I still have one account under a payment arrangement, which is current. Will my past credit issues negatively impact my chances of securing this job?

It’s understandable to feel anxious about how your credit history could impact your job application, especially in the banking sector where financial integrity is critical. In many cases, employers conduct background checks that may include credit history, but this doesn’t automatically disqualify you from consideration, particularly if you have taken steps to address past issues.
Since you have settled your bad credit and are currently in a payment arrangement and up to date, it’s worth mentioning this proactively during the final assessment or any follow-up discussions with your potential employer. Highlighting your proactive approach to managing your credit could demonstrate responsibility and commitment, which are essential qualities in the banking industry.
Ultimately, each bank has its own policies regarding hiring candidates with bad credit. It might be beneficial for you to inquire discreetly about their policies or to seek advice from someone in HR if you feel comfortable doing that. Best of luck with your application!
