Considering a Career in Recruitment
Hi everyone,
I’m exploring the possibility of a career in recruitment and would love to hear from those of you who have experience in the field. Your honest insights would be greatly appreciated!
I currently work shifts and weekends, so the idea of a traditional 9-to-5 schedule sounds appealing for better routine and work-life balance. I have a range of transferable skills that I believe would be a good fit for this role.
I’m particularly curious about a few things:
– How often do you find yourself taking work home, or do you really stick to regular office hours?
– What are the actual earning expectations in this field, beyond the numbers typically highlighted in job ads?
– Do you find the work enjoyable? Is it stressful? Also, any recommendations for recruitment companies based in the Northwest? I’m in Warrington but am willing to travel to Manchester or Liverpool.
I’m just looking for a straightforward understanding of the role without any sales pitch, if that makes sense!
Thank you!

Hi there!
It’s great that you’re considering a career in recruitment – it can be a rewarding path if it aligns with your skills and interests. Here’s my take on your questions based on my experience in the recruitment industry:
Work Hours: The typical recruitment role can often be 9-5, especially if you’re in a more corporate environment. However, it’s not uncommon to occasionally take work home, especially if you’re under tight deadlines or preparing for interviews. The workload can fluctuate, so while you may aim for a balanced schedule, be prepared for busier periods.
Earning Expectations: Realistically, salaries can vary widely depending on the sector, location, and your experience. Entry-level recruiters might start around £20k-£25k, while more experienced recruiters can earn anywhere from £30k to £50k with the potential for bonuses on top of that. Top-performing recruiters in high-demand sectors can even exceed £60k, but it often involves significant effort and performance.
Job Enjoyment and Stress: Many recruiters find the job enjoyable, especially the people interaction and helping candidates find their dream roles. That said, it can be stressful due to targets, deadlines, and the competitive nature of the job. The key is to stay organized and set realistic expectations for both yourself and your clients.
Recommendations for Companies: In the North West, there are several reputable recruitment agencies. Some to consider include Hays, Michael Page, and Adecco. However, smaller boutique firms or niche recruiters can provide a different experience and often have a more intimate team culture.
In conclusion, if you enjoy working with people and are driven by targets, recruitment could be a fulfilling career path for you. Just be prepared for the ups and downs that come with the territory. Good luck with your decision!
