Filipino Job Seeker in the U.S.
Hello everyone! I’m currently awaiting my work authorization based on marriage here in the U.S., but I’d love to gain some insights into how American employers perceive international credentials. I’m particularly interested in whether I might be able to secure a position that reflects my experience in the Philippines.
A bit about me: I have built a successful career as a Vice President of Compliance at an outsourced international bank, specifically with Wells Fargo. Prior to that role, I held senior leadership positions at several other international banks. While my responsibilities were essentially the same as those of my U.S. counterparts, I worry that my experience might not carry the same weight here. It seems employers often prefer candidates with U.S.-specific experience, which could mean I have to settle for a more junior position.
If anyone—be it employers or fellow job seekers in a similar situation—could share their experiences or offer insight into the hiring landscape, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance!

Hi there! First off, congratulations on your upcoming move and your marriage-based work authorization. It’s completely understandable to have concerns about how your extensive experience will be perceived in the U.S. job market.
Many employers in the U.S. value international experience, especially from reputable companies like Wells Fargo. Your role as a VP for compliance and your leadership positions in international banks surely demonstrate a high level of expertise and skill. While it’s true that some employers may prefer candidates with U.S. experience, numerous organizations recognize the benefits of diverse perspectives and global experience.
Here are a few insights that might help you:
Leverage Your Experience: Make sure to articulate how your previous roles relate to the position you’re applying for in the U.S. Highlight any transferable skills and specific accomplishments that showcase your impact.
Networking: Engage with professionals in your field through networking events, online platforms (like LinkedIn), and industry groups. Building connections can open doors and help employers see your value.
Education and Certification: If you have relevant degrees or certifications, ensure they are clearly listed on your resume. If time allows, consider obtaining U.S. certifications that are recognized in your industry.
Tailor Your Resume and Cover Letter: Customize your application materials for each job you apply for. Research the company culture and values to align your application accordingly.
Consider Entry Points: If you find that you’re being considered for more junior roles, don’t hesitate to apply for them as a stepping stone. Once you’re in the industry, it can be easier to move up, especially given your leadership background.
Be Open and Positive: Many employers appreciate candidates who show adaptability and a willingness to learn. Be open about your experience but also express your eagerness to contribute to their organization.
Overall, while some employers may prioritize U.S. experience, there are many who value global expertise and leadership. Stay confident in your abilities, and don’t hesitate to highlight your unique background!
Best of luck in your job search!
