Is earning £100k realistic, and what were your salaries in Years 1, 2, and 3?
After spending six years in software and web development, I’ve decided to transition into recruitment, where there’s significant potential for commission earnings!
So, here’s the burning question: how much can I really make?
I’ve come across mixed opinions—some say it’s definitely possible to hit that £100k mark, while others aren’t so sure.
I’d love to hear your experiences. What were your salaries in recruitment, and do you believe earning £100k is achievable with dedication after three years?

Achieving a salary of £100k in recruitment is definitely possible, especially if you’re coming from a background in software and web development, which can be advantageous in tech recruitment. Many high-performing recruiters do reach that milestone, particularly in niche markets where your skills and insights can add significant value.
To give you an idea of potential earnings, here’s a common trajectory that many recruiters experience:
Year 1: Many recruiters start out earning between £20k to £30k base salary, with on-target earnings (OTE) including commission pushing total earnings to around £40k to £50k if you hit your targets.
Year 2: As you gain experience and build a network, your base salary might increase to £30k to £40k, with potential OTE of £60k to £75k based on commissions from placements.
Year 3: By this point, if you’re performing well and perhaps specializing in a lucrative niche, it’s reasonable to aim for a base salary of £40k to £50k, and with commissions, you could potentially hit that £100k mark if you’re consistently making placements.
To reach £100k, you’ll need to establish strong client relationships, effectively understand both your candidates and the markets you’re recruiting for, and possibly consider moving into more senior roles or specialized recruitment sectors.
It’s also important to keep in mind that every recruitment firm is different, and the commission structure can vary greatly. Ultimately, with dedication, networking, and strategic approach, reaching £100k by year three is achievable for many recruiters. Good luck with your new career!
