Seeking Advice on Job Hunting in a Different City in Australia
Hello everyone,
I’m currently based in Canberra and on the lookout for a data engineer position. I’ve applied to numerous roles across Australia that seem like a perfect fit for me, but unfortunately, I haven’t received any responses from the recruitment agencies.
I have a few questions:
- Do people from Canberra face challenges when applying for jobs in other states?
- Could my background in the APS be affecting my job search?
- What strategies can I employ to increase my chances of securing a job or at least landing an interview? Are there specific recruitment agencies I should focus on?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Hi there!
It sounds like you’re facing a frustrating situation, but don’t lose hope—finding a new job can take time, especially when relocating to a different city. Here are some thoughts on your questions:
Are Canberra people not appreciated in other states?
Not at all! Skills and experience are valued regardless of where you’re from. However, the job market can be competitive, and sometimes local candidates might have an edge due to familiarity with the market or industry.
Is it something to do with my APS background?
It’s possible that your APS background may lead some employers to perceive you as more suited for government roles rather than private sector positions. It might be helpful to emphasize your adaptability and any relevant skills or experiences from your roles that align with private sector expectations.
How do I go about securing a job (at least an interview)? Do I need to target any particular recruitment agency?
Here are a few suggestions:
Keep applying and networking, and don’t hesitate to seek feedback on your resume and cover letter from peers or professionals in the field. Best of luck as you embark on this journey!
Hope this helps!
