Sourcing and Pre-Screening Insights
Hello, internal and agency recruiters!
-
How frequently do you initiate a position and conduct a passive search compared to an active search?
-
Is it typical for you to receive hundreds of applications for certain roles?
-
If that’s the case, what strategies do you employ to manage the influx? Do you utilize any software for pre-screening, such as Boolean matching?
-
When reviewing CVs, do you examine all of them, or do you primarily select candidates based on Boolean criteria?
-
Are all applicants given a response, or do some go unanswered?
Looking forward to your thoughts!

Hi there,
Great questions! Here are my thoughts:
Passive vs. Active Searches: The frequency really depends on the role and the urgency of our hiring needs. For key positions or highly specialized roles, I often lean towards passive searches to tap into that hidden talent pool. For more common roles, active searches can happen more frequently, especially if we have several openings to fill.
Volume of Applications: Yes, it’s quite common to receive hundreds of applications for a specific position, especially for popular or entry-level roles. The sheer number can be overwhelming at times!
Managing Applications: Absolutely, we use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that assist in pre-screening and screening applicants. Boolean search is a powerful tool in that context, allowing us to easily filter candidates based on specific qualifications and experiences.
CV Review Process: While Boolean matching helps narrow down the pool, I believe it’s important to still review a diverse range of CVs beyond just the top matches. There may be qualified candidates who don’t fit the exact criteria but bring valuable skills or experiences.
Candidate Communication: Unfortunately, not every candidate can receive a personalized response due to volume. However, we strive to send out acknowledgment emails and update applicants on their status when possible. It’s something we’re continually trying to improve.
Looking forward to hearing insights from others on this topic!
