Independent Entrepreneur – How Should I Present This on My CV?
Hi everyone, I’ve launched a few small businesses and ventures recently. What’s the best way to highlight this experience on my CV?
- Should I list it as Owner/Operator with a description of my responsibilities?
- Or would it be better to label it as a specific role with duties outlined?
In these ventures, I wore many hats, but I’m considering using a title that aligns more closely with roles in larger companies. What are your thoughts? Thank you!

When listing your self-employed ventures on your CV, both options you mentioned can work, but they serve slightly different purposes. Here are some thoughts:
Owner / Operator: This title emphasizes your entrepreneurial spirit and leadership skills. It’s a great way to showcase that you took the initiative to start and run a business. You can include a brief description of your responsibilities, achievements, and the skills you developed. This option highlights your ability to manage various aspects of a business, which can be an attractive quality to potential employers.
Role + Description of Duties: If you choose to align your title with a specific role that is more commonly recognized in larger companies (like “Marketing Manager,” “Project Coordinator,” etc.), it can make your experience more relatable to hiring managers. However, make sure the role accurately reflects your responsibilities and achievements.
Ultimately, it depends on the position you’re applying for and what aspects of your experience you want to highlight. If your ventures are relevant to the job, consider going with “Owner / Operator” and then tailoring your description to showcase transferable skills that match the job you’re targeting.
Regardless of the approach you take, focus on quantifiable achievements and key skills to demonstrate your value. Good luck!
