Business Development – CV Speculative Submissions
Do recruiters still send out CVs to potential clients in order to generate new business? This approach used to be highly effective for me, but over the past year, the results have been lackluster. As a recruiter in the tech sector, the conventional wisdom was to identify strong candidates with the desired skill sets and forward their resumes to hiring managers, with the expectation that at least one would express interest.
So, what has changed?

It sounds like you’re experiencing a common shift in the recruitment landscape, especially in tech. Here are a few reasons why the traditional approach of sending CVs might not be yielding the same results:
Increased Competition: The tech recruitment market has become more saturated. Many firms are likely employing similar strategies, leading to an overload of candidates for hiring managers to sift through. This can dilute the effectiveness of simply sending out CVs.
Changes in Hiring Practices: Many companies are now prioritizing cultural fit and soft skills in addition to technical expertise. Recruiters need to focus more on building relationships and understanding the specific needs of hiring managers rather than just sending over CVs.
Emergence of Direct Sourcing: Companies are increasingly using platforms like LinkedIn to directly source candidates. This has made it more crucial for recruiters to offer value beyond just supplying CVs, such as insights into the candidate market or specialized knowledge in tech niches.
The Rise of Passive Candidates: Many top candidates are not actively looking for new opportunities. This means that waiting for them to respond to a CV might not be effective; instead, proactive engagement and relationship-building are essential.
Enhanced Employer Branding: Companies are placing more emphasis on their employer brand and the candidate experience. Sending a CV might not resonate if the candidate doesn’t already have a positive perception of the company.
To adapt, consider focusing on building stronger relationships with both candidates and clients. Engage in consultative recruitment approaches, provide market insights, and tailor your outreach to align with the specific needs and goals of the companies you work with. Networking, thought leadership, and community involvement in tech industries can also help reinvigorate your recruitment strategy. Good luck!
