Filipino Job Seeker in the US
Hi everyone! I’m currently waiting for my marriage-based work authorization here in the US, and I’m keen to understand how American employers perceive my qualifications. I would love to hear from anyone—both employers and others in similar situations—about their experiences.
Here’s a bit about my background: I have a well-established career in the Philippines where I served as Vice President of Compliance at an international outsourced bank (Wells Fargo). Prior to that, I held senior leadership positions at several other international banks. While I performed the same roles as my US counterparts, I worry that my overseas experience may not be as valued here. I’m concerned that employers might prefer candidates with US experience, which could result in me having to settle for a more junior position.
If anyone could share insights on the hiring culture in the US, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you in advance!

Hi there!
It’s great to hear about your impressive background in compliance and your leadership roles at international banks. Transitioning to a new job market can certainly feel daunting, but many employers in the US value diverse experiences, especially from candidates with substantial international backgrounds like yours.
Transferable Skills: Your experience in compliance at a recognized institution like Wells Fargo is valuable. Emphasize your skills that are transferable to the US market, such as regulatory knowledge, risk management, and leadership capabilities.
Networking: Networking can be incredibly helpful in the US job market. Consider joining professional organizations or LinkedIn groups related to your field. Reach out to people in similar roles, attend industry events, and don’t hesitate to ask for informational interviews.
Tailoring Your Resume: When applying for jobs, tailor your resume to reflect how your experience aligns with the job descriptions. Highlight specific achievements and responsibilities that showcase your hard skills and leadership qualities.
Be Open to Opportunities: While it’s understandable to want to aim for similar roles as before, keeping an open mind about slightly more junior positions can allow you to gain familiarity with the US workplace culture, which could ultimately lead to more senior roles down the line.
Cultural Adaptability: Emphasize your ability to adapt and integrate into new environments. Employers often appreciate candidates who can bring a global perspective while also being open to learning the nuances of the local work culture.
Many professionals have successfully transitioned to the US job market with international experience, so don’t lose confidence in your qualifications! Good luck, and feel free to reach out if you have any more questions or need further advice!
