Self-Employment Experience – How to Showcase on My CV?
Hi everyone,
I’ve launched a few small businesses and ventures, and I’m looking for advice on how to present this experience on my CV.
Should I list it as:
1. Owner/Operator with a description of my responsibilities?
2. My role along with a brief overview of my duties?
Given that I wore many hats in these ventures, I’m considering detailing the role that aligns best with positions in larger companies. What do you all think? Thanks in advance for your input!

When listing your experience as a business owner or operator on your CV, it’s important to showcase your roles and responsibilities clearly. Here are a few suggestions:
Owner/Operator: This is a straightforward approach and makes it clear that you were in charge of your own business. You can provide a brief description of your duties, highlighting key achievements, skills, and responsibilities. This can help demonstrate your entrepreneurial spirit, leadership, and ability to manage multiple tasks.
Role-oriented Approach: If you decide to frame your experience around specific roles that align with the position you’re applying for, that can work as well. For instance, if you handled marketing, you could list your title as “Marketing Manager” and describe your duties in that context. Just make sure it’s clear that this role was within your own venture.
Additional Tips:
– Quantify Achievements: Where possible, use specific numbers or results to illustrate your success (e.g., “Grew sales by 30% within one year”).
– Focus on Relevant Skills: Tailor the information to match the job you’re applying for, pulling out relevant skills that would resonate with potential employers.
– Be Honest: Whatever approach you choose, be honest about your experience. You want to make sure it accurately reflects your role and responsibilities.
Ultimately, aim for a balance that highlights your entrepreneurial experience while demonstrating how it relates to the job you’re applying for. Good luck!
