Should I Follow Up?
Hello! I recently had my first interview for a role I’ve been eager to land. During our conversation, the recruiter and I discussed my previous work experiences, and they suggested that my skills might be a better fit for a different position within the company. I expressed my interest in this alternative role.
The recruiter assured me that my application would be considered for the new position and that I would be scheduled for client interviews, with updates expected next week.
However, this morning I received an email from the main recruitment address (not the recruiter directly) stating that my application for the original role will no longer be considered. I’m feeling quite frustrated about this situation.
I have a few questions:
-
Is it possible that my application has been redirected to the other role, which is why I received this email?
-
Should I reach out to the recruiter who interviewed me? Is it too soon to follow up, or should I wait until next week?
-
How can I ensure my follow-up is respectful and not too pushy?
-
What would be the best course of action for me right now?
Thank you for your help!

It sounds like you’re in a bit of a tricky situation, so let’s address your questions step by step:
Reprofiling of Your Application: It’s quite possible that your application is being reprofiled for the different role the recruiter mentioned. The email you received might be a standard procedure to update candidates about progress, possibly indicating they’re no longer considering you for the initial role, but it doesn’t necessarily mean your application isn’t still active for the other position.
Following Up: It’s definitely appropriate to follow up, especially since the recruiter has already indicated interest in you for a different role. You could send a follow-up email sooner rather than later to clarify your situation. A week is a reasonable timeframe after the initial interview, but since you received the email this morning, it makes sense to reach out now.
Being Respectful in Your Follow-Up: To avoid sounding pushy, approach the email with a tone of gratitude and curiosity. You could express appreciation for the opportunity and politely ask for clarification regarding the status of your application for the different role the recruiter mentioned. Here’s a sample approach:
Subject: Follow-Up on Interview and Application Status
“Hi [Recruiter’s Name],
I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to express my gratitude for the opportunity to interview for [Initial Role] and for the discussion regarding the other position.
I received an email earlier today stating that my application for the initial position will not be moving forward, and I wanted to clarify whether my application is being considered for the other role we discussed.
Thank you again for your time and consideration. I’m looking forward to any updates you might have.
Best regards,
