Considering a Career in Recruitment
Hey everyone! I’m contemplating a transition into the recruitment field and would love to hear some honest insights from those who are already in it.
Currently, I work shifts and weekends, so the prospect of a regular 9-5 schedule is quite appealing for achieving better structure and work-life balance. I believe I possess a range of transferable skills that could be beneficial in recruitment.
Here are a few things I’m curious about:
– How often do you find yourself bringing work home, or is it truly a 9-5 role?
– What can I realistically expect to earn in this field, beyond the enticing figures often highlighted in job postings?
– Do you enjoy your work? Is it stressful? Also, any recommendations for companies in the Northwest? I’m based in Warrington but can easily commute to Manchester or Liverpool.
I’m really just looking for candid feedback about the role without any sales pitch. Thanks in advance!

Hi there!
It’s great to hear you’re considering a career in recruitment! It’s definitely an industry with its ups and downs, and your questions are very valid. Here’s my honest take based on my experience:
Work Hours: While many recruitment roles are advertised as 9-5, the reality can vary. Some recruiters do manage to stick to those hours, especially in agency settings. However, it’s not uncommon to find yourself working outside of those hours, especially during busy periods or when you’re trying to hit targets. That said, many companies are becoming more flexible with work-life balance, so it might depend on the specific company culture.
Earning Expectations: Realistically, it can vary widely. In entry-level roles, you might start with a base salary anywhere from £20,000 to £25,000, with the potential for commission on top. Realistically, once you gain experience and build a client base, you could expect to earn anywhere from £30,000 to £50,000 annually, depending on how well you perform and the commission structure of your company. It’s important to chat with current recruiters in the firms you’re considering to get a clearer picture.
Enjoyment and Stress Levels: Enjoyment will depend on your personal interests and the work environment. Many find recruitment rewarding, especially when helping candidates find jobs and supporting companies in building their teams. However, it can also be quite stressful—targets, client demands, and the pressure to perform can be challenging. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment and enjoy building relationships, it could be a good fit for you.
Company Recommendations in the NW: There are several reputable recruitment agencies in the North West. Some well-known ones include Reed, Hays, and Michael Page, but there are many specialized agencies as well. Networking within local recruitment groups on platforms like LinkedIn could also give you more insights into specific companies that might fit what you’re looking for.
Overall, it sounds like you have a good mindset for a career in recruitment! If you decide to pursue it, be sure to research and find a company with a culture that aligns with your values. Good luck with your decision! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
