Exploring Opportunities in the Life Sciences Sector
Hi everyone,
I posted yesterday about my current agent encouraging me to establish a new desk in the Life Sciences sector. I’m reaching out to see if anyone with experience in this industry could share insights regarding fees and billing potential.
Right now, I’m weighing the option of leaving my current desk in Healthcare, where I’ve completed six deals totaling just over £40K, resulting in an average deal size of around £6,666—pretty typical for our office.
I perceive greater long-term potential in Life Sciences due to its more in-depth nature, as opposed to the transactional environment I’ve been experiencing in Healthcare. I have a genuine interest in the field and aspire to become an “industry expert” in it.
That being said, I’m cautious about moving away from a successful desk that’s growing. I’m aware it might take 12–18 months to reach consistent billing and earn substantial commissions in the new sector.
Currently, it seems that few peers in our office are billing over £150K annually in Life Sciences. My goal is to set my sights higher, aiming for a minimum of £250K annually and continued growth beyond that.
Any insights into the Life Sciences industry, tips for building a successful desk, and realistic expectations for billings and timelines would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Hi there!
It’s great to see your enthusiasm for transitioning into the Life Science sector. It sounds like you’ve had a solid start in Healthcare, but it’s understandable that you’re looking for more long-term growth and fulfillment in a field that genuinely interests you.
In terms of fees and billing potential in the Life Science industry, you’re typically looking at higher average deal sizes compared to healthcare. Depending on the specific niche (e.g., pharmaceuticals, biotech, medical devices, etc.), deal sizes can often range between £10K to several hundred thousand, particularly for roles in specialized areas or high-demand positions. With this in mind, many recruiters in Life Sciences can achieve annual billings of £250K or more, especially if they build a solid pipeline and establish strong relationships.
Here are a few tips for setting up a successful desk in Life Sciences:
Market Research: Start by diving deep into the market trends, key players, and emerging technologies within the Life Sciences field. This will help you position yourself as an expert and develop your network.
Networking: Attend industry conferences, webinars, and local meetups to meet professionals in the field. Building a strong network early on can significantly boost your recruitment success.
Specialization: Focus on a niche within Life Sciences where you can develop expertise. Candidates and clients appreciate working with someone who really knows their area.
Collaborate: Don’t hesitate to collaborate with colleagues who might already have an established presence in Life Sciences. This can help you learn the ropes and leverage their knowledge and networks while you build your own.
Timeframe: While it may take time to establish a new desk (as you’ve noted, a 12-18 month ramp-up is a common timeline), the potential for higher commissions and personal interest can make it worthwhile in the long run. The key is to stay patient and persistent.
Ultimately, it sounds like you’re keen on not just achieving financial goals but also finding fulfillment in your work. If you have a passion for Life Sciences, that enthusiasm can often translate into success. If you feel confident that you can overcome the initial hurdles, it might be worth making that leap. Best of luck in your decision!
